Off Road Driving

7 September, 2009 1 comment

I am unsure of the real direction the current Government has chosen to take with the number of cars on the nation’s roadways.

First they said that there are too many cars so they raised the cost of liscencing the Foreign (ab)Used aka Rool On Rool Off. Now they increasing the fines for law infractions. Laws that are already under threat by any good lawyer. Many people would have gladly paid TT$200 to get the process over in short order but TT$2000… its best you get your day in court. Many of the laws that People are charged for, if ever, are vague and pretty descent arguements can be made before a magistrate to get out of paying a ticket… especially when the officer who laid the charge on vacation… or on a charge himself.

Currently the vehicles in the Police Department have no Video Recording/Timing devices to prove if someone was driving on the shoulder or any other law breaking offence. It will be solely based on an officer’s testimony and well they not getting a good rap these days. I’ve been saying it a while now that all we need is/was to simply enforce existing laws and all would have been honky dorry… now you figure that by increasing the fine that would make a difference. If the POLICE weren’t charging before what would make me think different.

The Breathalyzer Bill was passed in Parliament and sent to Prez Party to the Max… now he doh drive heself anywhere again but he could/does real drink… could it be the reason why it hasn’t been proclaimed into LAW… i know MOWT Man aka Cgolem (the C is silent) said that they have a problem with calibrating the equipment or some chupidness like that was the main issue… now you trying to force people to have a special seat for any passenger under five years of age… does/will this apply to Maxi Taxis and other vehicles for HIRE… including Public Transportation Buses… and how will we/you prove the age of the child… should one always walk around with the child’s Machine Readable Passport… if they ever get around the appointment dates and swearing of affidavits… in truth common sense shouldn’t have to be regulated…

the Government plans to implement all these LAWS while continuing with a Highways program which seeks to widen existing roadways and create new byways… so you want more cars on the road or not… if yes then i welcome the initiative to have more CNG filling stations… but that project still in the planning/pipe laying stage… and Government vehicles should be the first to be converted… the FREE CNG kit installation sounds nice… and who getting the contract to import the CNG ready vehicles…

i know my writing was all over on this topic but that just how the current Govt plan seems to be as well… we go charge dem more… ok that eh really work too good… remove gas subsidy… oh gosh they still driving… so lets increase the transfer fee again… increase the cost of permit renewal as well… and well say that the law breakers will now pay thousands instead of hundreds… oh yeah but we go leave we vehicles with heavy tint…

SONY HVR-MRC1

SONY HVR-MRC1

I finally decided to test the SONY HVR-MRC1 that I have access to. Its been around for sometime and I took it out to do some testing. After formatting a 2GB Compact Flash card in the unit I went thru the menu and checked out the settings.

I first tested with the File type set to Raw DV… easier for me as I also have access to FCS… no need to render the file to play with it in Real Time. I also set the iLink to Synchronous rather than Follow… it works well even without a tape in the camera… I was using a SONY HVR-V1U… Started with DV because most of the content in Trinidad & Tobago is still SD… Standard Definition… I subscribe to the school of thought that its better to shoot/record at higher resolution (HD) as one could always compress/squeeze it after without much loss… but the other way could be problematic… quality would suffer…

I decided to record some footage while I journeyed from St. Augustine to Couva and back. Test results made the iReport on Driving post back in March.

While researching I had read about the M2T file type and some people’s problems with using it… sorry to say I had no problems… the file was easily converted using MPEGStreamClip.

Haven’t tested since as there seems to be a shortage of 16GB CompactFlash Cards in Trinidad… some real bogus Computer Stores here… two 32GB Cards are on order and should hopefully arrive for testing during a Concert in the not to distant future…

I Got in Lane

1 May, 2009 17 comments

follow up to the Get In Lane post…

so I make a few passes by the FlyOver and OverPass, Churchill-Roosevelt/Uriah-Butler Highway Interchange (CRUBi), that were opened to the public on 01MAY2009.. and made my observations… Nasty Little Truths pointed out earlier that the size of the SHOULDER on the FlyOver is like a whole other Lane… a TAXI Lane… I saw that there were also NO Stopping/Waiting but that didn’t stop people from doing just that… I guess they were experiencing an emergency, being 50 meters up in the air and all… PM PM was himself guilty…

Earlier in the week I visited Grand Bazaar and was alarmed at how close the EXIT, from the Highway, is after crossing the Traffic Lights… If you are not in the LEFT most lane you would definitely be giving someone a BAD Drive to get to it… On approaching the Junction to go either into Grand Bazaar or one of the Bamboos there are signs… so if yuh cyar read ensure that you have a literate person with you… to get to Bamboo #3 is fairly easy just keep kinda straight… or LEFT which ever way you read it… You have to take the OverPass to get to Bamboo #1.

now when you on the Bamboo OverPass remember that it is a DUAL-Carriage-way… no signage showing you this… the Road arrows are too FEW… then when you reach atop the OverPass Keep in the LEFT Lane if you going Bamboo #1… if you heading WEST go into the MIDDLE Lane… I didn’t see any sign telling me this.. if yuh watch d vid yuh go see the swerve… now exiting that RAMP heading WEST kinda DANGEROUS… the merge lane real short and you really doh have much time to see the cars coming from SOUTH… and we know the ‘numbers’ that Trini Drivers does be doing on the Uriah-Butler Highway… d vid have a van/3Ton nearly swiping me and also when I passed by a car exiting the RAMP practically stopped to check the traffic…

the interchange eh finish and I believe is only a RAMP for NORTH bound Traffic that want to reach Grand Bazaar/Bamboo #3 that needs to be completed… currently peeps have to drive through Bamboo #1 and then use the OverPass… there was ample signage coming from SOUTH to let you know this… even tho the Traffic Lights signage no longer necessary…

so the Project nearing completion… months late and probably WAAAAY OVER Budget… so when you come Trini or finally drive past the Lighthouse yuh cyar say yuh eh know where to go…

I wonder what the Road-Sellers have to say about the South Bound Traffic now bypassing them?

allyuh go be reading this on Saturday buh waheva

Who tell me to go and do FreeLance work today… when all ah dem road closed fuh d Fifth Summit Leaders who go be arriving… well is JAM in meh A$$… Talk bout TRAFFIC… I take nearly an hour to make a journey of less than two kilometres… that was to reach… my return was shorter though but I think Barack Obama didn’t obey the speed limit cause he reach to d Hyatt from Piarco real fass… 1525 to 1554 so da is about 30 mins aka half an hour… da journey is about 25 kilometres… they finally put some POLICE to work in the afternoon…

I feel Obama peel out fast cause he jump d line in d Airport and left other Summit Leaders on the Tarmac.. they then made it known in their Opening Ceremony remarks…

I had a time tweeting about all the proceedings on the tele… pretty cool day otherwise…

I have some cellphone pics from meh Nokia 6300 I eh have no fancy SmartPhone cause meh Sony Ericsson P800 real outta date and does only be rebooting itself… sponsor d I a Berry nah… or even an iPhone

=================
I eh know eh but I’ve had a traffic plan for this area for some years now… ever since meh radiator fail the day after 2 hour traffic in the zone… and it would definitely help if it is enforced…

  • Turn GOYA Road One Way… it doh have to be the whole road but just dat little portion by the Eastern Main Road… make it such that Traffic can EXIT Goya onto the EMR… and no cars should be turning into GOYA… especially from the WEST bound lane of the EMR…
  • the road Opposite Goya, Ramjit? should only allow Traffic to enter from the EMR… no exit onto the EMR…
  • Richard Street in Tacarigua should only have cars entering from the EMR… the corner done sharp already…
