In this weekly Mus’ Buss Caan Buss song review feature, three musical minds will analyse each song and will grade it on vocal ability, lyrics, musical arrangement and appeal. Songs that make the grade will be dubbed ‘Mus’ Buss’, while songs that flop they will be dumped in the ‘Caan Buss’ bin.
The three reviewers welcome feedback from the artistes and the public about the column. Send your comments to bussdem@hotmail.com or mail in your songs to ‘Mus’ Buss’ at The Gleaner Company, 7 North Street, Kingston. This week the mus’ buss/caan buss team will be reviewing Good Girl Gone Bad (Head Concussion Music) by Tarrus Riley and Konshens.
King Kong: “Konshens flow like Assassin on dis.”
Witch: “Mi like how Tarrus sound on dis, it’s slightly different from his usual and yuh hear his depth. when Konshens come in for his part him melody just sound mad, sick.”
Lady Boo: “I’m in love.”
Witch: “As usual it’s Konshens.”
Lady Boo: “Even though him sound like Assassin in some part him kinda sound like a rastaman to some extent.”
King Kong: “Tarrus Riley show him versality on dis one; him talented. The production nice. Russian a gwaan.”
Lady Boo: “Tarrus flow sound different on dis one, even though him a sing somewhat him sound really melodious.”
Witch: “Yeah the riddim reminds me something I’d hear in Chicago the musical, which goes with the theme of the song. it’s jazzy but different, movie-like. Tarrus is impressive on dis and so is Konshens. the two of them, coming from two different places, can come together on dis to sound unique. Who woulda thought they would come together and provide dis?”
Lady Boo: “And me like dis whole rockish, disco, snapping vibe; mi feel like mi woulda do some twisting, jive, and likkle ska and nuh linga.”
King Kong: “Is a collaboration that was worth the effort. The likkle girls must take heed.”
Lady Boo: “They are really two distinct but powerful voices. Mi just like the song.”
Witch: “Good thing is dat is a radio and street cred kinda song. The message is strong and it will hit. Russian really a gwaan hard – different.”
Lady Boo: “As for the concept of the song, mi really like dat, and mi just hope seh the good girls weh gone bad actually listen to di song and accept the message. Mi really like the lyrics.”
Witch: “It has a catchy hook. people can sing along, which will make it more popular and a vibe. The riddim itself have a vibe. I would be interested to see how selectors would play it, as in what genres they woulda mix it wid, cause it nuh really sound like anything else out there now.”
Lady Boo: “And it woulda interesting to know if it will get as much plays in dancehall.”
Witch: “I think it will. Tarrus has that effect on people where his songs appeal to everybody. Buss or not?”
King Kong: “Buss, ultra buss; it buss like Start Anew and This Means Money.“
Lady Boo: “Mi like it. mi like both of dem and di song. There’s just something about it.”
